Profile

Peter Barakan was born in London in 1951. Graduated Japanese department of School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in 1973. And has been living in Tokyo since 1974. Has worked in broadcasting since 1980, with particular emphasis on introducing a wide variety of music from different parts of the world to a public that is often force-fed only what is commercially convenient for large corporations. He currently hosts a Saturday morning free-form radio programme on nationwide station NHK-FM, and a Sunday evening programme for Tokyo area commercial station Inter FM.

On television he is known for the ground-breaking music video programme “The Popper’s MTV” from the mid-80s, and also for his hosting of the Japanese broadcast of the US news magazine show “60 Minutes,” which ran in Japan from 1988 to 2014. He now hosts “Japanology Plus” in English for public broadcaster NHK’s foreign satellite service NHK World, introducing different aspects of Japanese culture to an international audience.

He has written several books including a beginner’s guide to soul music, a book explaining some of the subtleties of rock lyrics for Japanese readers, a guide to English pronunciation for Japanese readers, and a memoir of his forty-plus years working in radio.

He served as Executive Director of InterFM, responsible for programming, from 2012 to 2014, and since returning to his freelance broadcasting status is involved with a variety of projects including Peter Barakan’s Music Film Festival (https://pbmff.jp/) since 2021.
